Romantic Love

There is a new TV series that I think has a potential this season, called “Cupid.” It’s on at 9:00 pm on Thursday nights on CBS. It’s about a “relationship” counselor/newspaper columnist and a guy who believes he is the Eros being punished by being casted off from the Mount Olympus (to Chicago, go figures) and never to come back until he successfully arranges 100 couples. Okay, okay. So, I am a big fan of “Ally McBeal,” too. :) (Oh, and “South Park,” too.)

Anyway, the today’s episode, well actually the last night’s, a character who’s another relationship expert, asks “Why do we need love?” Here, “love” only means “romantic love.” (I can go on about the numerous problems caused by the careless and wide use of the term “love.” But I will save it for another time.) The two main characters of the show could not answer it in words and neither the show. I thought for a while (oh, about 5 minutes?) and could not come up with a self-satisfying answer. At least not in words. I feel and believe that we need it, but I couldn’t come up with a reason for it. Maybe it’s absurd to answer this kind of questions in words. Maybe this question falls into the realm of “religious beliefs.” That is, you either believe its necessity or you don’t.

So, can you tell me the answer?
